![]() ![]() Carl Benedikt Frey, an economist at Oxford University, told Insider that AI-tools like ChatGPT may actually help workers in "creative" industries like art and graphic design produce higher quality work. "Upskilling millions of people in their ability to create and manipulate images will have a profound impact on the economy," they wrote, adding that "these recent advances in AI will surely usher in a period of hardship and economic pain for some whose jobs are directly impacted and who find it hard to adapt."īut Dr. In a December Harvard Business Review post, three professors pointed to DALL-E, an AI tool that can generate images in seconds, as a potential disruptor of the graphic design industry. "It's almost like a bit of a productivity boost that some of these occupations might get, because you can use tools that actually do this better," Madgavkar said. "The data is actually quite structured, very language-oriented, and therefore quite amenable to generative AI," she added.īut again, AI won't fully be able to automate these jobs since it requires a degree of human judgement to understand what a client or employer wants. Language-oriented roles like these are susceptible to automation, Madgavkar said. Like media roles, jobs in the legal industry such as paralegals and legal assistants are responsible for consuming large amounts of information, synthesizing what they learned, then making it digestible through a legal brief or opinion. That's because the number of jobs in legal services is relatively small and have already been highly exposed to AI automation before the advent of new AI tools, Manav Raj, an author of the Goldman study, told Insider. Generative AI may most likely affect legal workers in the US, a recent Goldman Sachs report found. "There's a ton of human judgment that goes into each of these occupations," she said.ĪI can replicate some of the work that paralegals and legal assistants do, though they aren't entirely replaceable, experts say. Tech news site CNET used an AI tool similar to ChatGPT to write dozens of articles - though the publisher has had to issue a number of corrections - and BuzzFeed has used tech from the ChatGPT maker to generate new forms of content like quizzes and travel guides.īut Madgavkar said that the majority of work done by content creators is not automatable. The media industry is already beginning to experiment with AI-generated content. "Analyzing and interpreting vast amounts of language based data and information is a skill that you'd expect generative AI technologies to ramp up on," Madgavkar said.Įconomist Paul Krugman said in a New York Times op-ed that ChatGPT may be able to do tasks like reporting and writing "more efficiently than humans." That's because AI is able to read, write, and understand text-based data well, she added. Media jobs across the board - including those in advertising, technical writing, journalism, and any role that involves content creation - may be affected by ChatGPT and similar forms of AI, Madgavkar said. It actually can write code quite well."Įxperts say AI like ChatGPT is good at producing written content and can do so "more efficiently than humans." "Coding and programming is a good example of that. "In terms of jobs, I think it's primarily an enhancer than full replacement of jobs," Netzer told CBS MoneyWatch. Still, Oded Netzer, a Columbia Business School professor, thinks that AI will help coders rather than replace them. Tech companies like ChatGPT maker's OpenAI are already considering replacing software engineers with AI. "What took a team of software developers might only take some of them," he added. In fact, advanced technologies like ChatGPT could produce code faster than humans, which means that work can be completed with fewer employees, Mark Muro, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institute who has researched AI's impact on the American workforce, told Insider. That's because AI like ChatGPT is good at crunching numbers with relative accuracy. Tech jobs such as software developers, web developers, computer programmers, coders, and data scientists are "pretty amenable" to AI technologies "displacing more of their work," Madgavkar said. It often indicates a user profile.Ĭoders, software developers, and data analysts could be displaced by AI, an expert says.Ĭoding and computer programming are in-demand skills, but it's possible that ChatGPT and similar AI tools may fill in some of the gaps in the near future. The more astronomers can find, the more they can refine their understanding of this new class of phenomena. The scientists noted features that might provide a key for identifying similar incidents - long bursts from mergers - in the future, even ones that are dimmer or more distant. Now they'll need to factor long bursts into their calculations as well.Ī team led by Benjamin Gompertz, an astrophysicist at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, looked at the entire high-energy light curve, or the evolution of the event's brightness over time. They based their estimates on the rate of short bursts thought to occur across the cosmos. Scientists think neutron star mergers are a major source of the universe's heavy elements. The jets could be weakening ones from the original explosion or new ones powered by the resulting black hole or magnetar." "It's possible these high-energy gamma rays come from collisions between visible light from the kilonova and electrons in particle jets. Normally that emission decreases over time," said Alessio Mei, a doctoral candidate at the Gran Sasso Science Institute in L'Aquila, Italy, who led a group that studied the data. "This is the first time we've seen such an excess of high-energy gamma rays in the afterglow of a merger event. (Visible light's energy measures between about 2 and 3 electron volts, for comparison.) These gamma rays reached energies of up to 1 billion electron volts. Fermi detected high-energy gamma rays starting 1.5 hours post-burst and lasting more than 2 hours. The light following the burst, called the afterglow emission, also exhibited unusual features. ![]() ![]() Perhaps some distant long bursts could also produce kilonovae, but we haven't been able to see them. The event was also relatively nearby, by gamma-ray burst standards, which may have allowed telescopes to catch the kilonova's fainter light. Some have suggested the burst's oddities could be explained by the merger of a neutron star with another massive object, like a black hole. Many research groups have delved into the observations collected by Swift, Fermi, the Hubble Space Telescope, and others. Their observations have provided the earliest look yet at the first stages of a kilonova. "The kilonova we observed is the proof that connects mergers to these long-duration events, forcing us to rethink how black holes are formed."įermi and Swift detected the burst simultaneously, and Swift was able to rapidly identify its location in the constellation Bootes, enabling other facilities to quickly respond with follow-up observations. "Many years ago, Neil Gehrels, an astrophysicist and Swift's namesake, suggested that neutron star mergers could produce some long bursts," said Eleonora Troja, an astrophysicist at the University of Rome who led another team that studied the burst. This decay results in the production of heavy elements like gold and platinum. Heat generated by the radioactive decay of elements in the neutron-rich debris likely creates the kilonova's visible and infrared light. Scientists hypothesize that jets of high-speed particles, launched by the merger, produce the initial gamma-ray flare before they collide with the wreckage. They also generate gravitational waves, or ripples in space-time - although none were detected from this event.Įventually the neutron stars collide and merge, creating a cloud of hot debris emitting light across multiple wavelengths. As the stars circle ever closer, they strip neutron-rich material from each other. A classic short gamma-ray burst begins with two orbiting neutron stars, the crushed remnants of massive stars that exploded as supernovae. ![]() ![]() ![]() A great way to do that from home is with our free, KWTX Weather app. If you have an active subscription, it is recommended you unsubscribe before deleting your account or the app. delete any data it has on you or risk incurring a fine (upto 7.5k usd).
